ESTIENNEHow a card is made
Scroll story · draft 1

One card, five hands.

Every Estienne card passes through the same five stations before it leaves the studio. Scroll to watch one being made.

I · Stock

It starts as cotton.

A heavy sheet of cotton paper, cut to size. Soft to the touch, slow to yellow.

85 × 55 mm · 600 g/m² · 100% cotton
II · Blind emboss

Pressed, not printed.

A brass die pushes the mark up from behind. No ink at all. It is read by light and by fingertip.

Brass die · single level · no ink
III · Hot foil

A line of gold.

Heat and pressure lay down a thin foil. Matte champagne, so it catches the light without shouting.

Matte champagne foil · 120 °C
IV · Painted edge

The detail on the side.

The stack is clamped and its edges painted by hand. Seen only when the card turns, and remembered for it.

Oxblood · hand painted · per stack
V · Kept

Made to be handed over.

Sealed in a lined envelope, ready to change hands. What happens next is up to you.
